That was standard years ago, but few modern security products require it. A panel at the top of the main window reports your security status. None of the four antivirus labs I follow include System Shield in their testing. I did find some scattered results from Virus Bulletin, mostly old. System Shield failed to achieve VB1. The very best products earn excellent scores from all four labs. I use an algorithm to fit all the results on a 1 to 1. Kaspersky Anti Viruss aggregate score is a perfect 1. Bitdefenders is 9. I really prefer having lab results, and when the labs dont match my own results, I defer to the labs. For the benefit of antivirus products that consider a files source in their analysis, I now download my samples from online storage, rather than using a static folder sitting on the desktop. However, doing so proved problematic with System Shield. The ZIP file representing my main sample folder contains both malware and valid files. On detecting malware, System Shield quarantined the whole ZIP file. So yes, if you have one malicious file in a ZIP file of important data, youll lose the whole collection to quarantine. I had to turn off protection to download and extract the samples. Malware Protection Results Chart. I turned the antivirus back on and opened the folder of samples. It slowly began reporting on detected malware. After about five minutes I stopped seeing new reports. At that point, it had wiped out 6. To test the flexibility of each products signature based detection, I use a second folder containing the same samples, with tweaks. For each file, I changed the name, appended zeroes to change its size, and overwrote some non executable bytes. And of course I only consider the tweaked version of files whose originals the antivirus detected. System Shield did well here, catching all but one of the tweaked files. However, that missed one was significant, as it was a sample of truly nasty ransomware. Ill go into more about that below. Continuing the test, I launched each sample that System Shield didnt shoot down on sight. Its performance was dismal. It totally missed more than 6. In no case where it caught some trace of malware did it prevent the malware from installing executable files on the test system. With 7. 5 percent detection and 6. System Shields scores are nearly the worst from products tested with my current sample set. Webroot Secure. Anywhere Anti. Virus and Norton both managed 1. Tested with my previous sample set, Comodo Antivirus, G Data, and Ashampoo all detected every sample. Comodos perfect malware protection earned it 1. I mentioned current and previous sample sets. Gathering and analyzing a new set takes me a week or more, so I cant do it often. Those files are far from recent. However, my malicious URL blocking test uses a feed of malware hosting URLs supplied by London based MRG Effitas. These URLs are typically just one day old. System Shield doesnt have a web protection component to keep the browser away from malicious or fraudulent URLs. Fortunately, I give just as much credit to an antivirus that blasts the malware payload during or right after the download process. I just keep launching URLs, discarding any that are no longer valid and recording how the antivirus reacts, until I have 1. The average for current products is 7. Norton is at the top, with 9. Trend Micro Antivirus Security close behind with 9. Nortons detections were roughly balanced between URL blocking and download blasting, while Trend Micro did almost all of its work by blocking all access to the dangerous URLs. Earlier I mentioned that System Shields real time protection didnt catch the tweaked version of one ransomware sample. My testing doesnt normally include launching those tweaked samples, and System Shield doesnt have any special features aimed at ransomware protection. But with so little data to go on, I decided to launch that tweaked sample. System Shield detected it and started quarantining files right away. However, when I looked closely, I found that all it had caught were document files strewn by the ransomware, ransom notes explaining how to pay up. Behind the scenes, the ransomware did its dirty deeds, encrypting my files. When it finished, it changed the desktop to a ransom note, and displayed another ransom note in the browser. I mentioned that System Shield missed quite a few of my other samples. These included Trojans, adware, and potentially unwanted programs, or PUPs.
